Si l’exploration spéléologique des Montagnes Nakanaï, situés dans l’île de Nouvelle-Bretagne en Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée, a commencé il y a 50 ans à peine, les expéditions successives ont découvert des phénomènes karstiques exceptionnels, uniques sur Terre. Gouffres géants perforant la jungle, rivières souterraines puissantes, gorges encaissées où résurgent des eaux blanches… Cet ouvrage est l’inventaire raisonné d’une centaine de cavités, les plus spectaculaires, choisies parmi les 259 explorées à ce jour. Écrit par des explorateurs passionnés de ces montagnes lointaines, couvertes d’une forêt primaire fragile, c’est un hommage à ces paysages karstiques menacés, que seule l’inscription au Patrimoine naturel mondial de l’Unesco pourra protéger durablement.
Although speleological exploration of the Nakanai Mountains, located on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea, began barely 50 years ago, successive expeditions have discovered exceptional karst phenomena, unique on Earth. Giant caves piercing the jungle, powerful underground rivers, deep gorges where white water gushes out... This book is a reasoned inventory of a hundred of the most spectacular caves, chosen among the 259 explored to date. Written by passionate explorers of these far away mountains covered by a fragile pristine forest, it is a tribute to these threatened karstic landscapes, that only the inscription in the World Natural Heritage of the Unesco will be able to protect durably.
